Forests cover approximately 20,000 ha within the Park and represent one of the major remaining lowland and riparian forest systems in the Po Valley. The project integrated three scales of analysis: individual-tree responses, landscape-scale forest responses and future carbon-sink dynamics. The first component used dendrochronology in three natural Scots pine stands to reconstruct the effects of drought on growth, resistance, recovery and resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Results indicate increasing sensitivity of radial growth to summer precipitation and temperature and substantial variability among sites and individual trees. The second component used multi-temporal satellite imagery and vegetation indices to assess drought responses of the Park&#8217;s main forest types between 2000 and 2018. Forests were generally sensitive to recent droughts: oak\u2013hornbeam and poplar forests showed reductions in primary productivity, whereas black-locust stands did not display comparable decline signals during the analysed period.
