SOSFOR – Sustainable Operating Spaces for Forests

SOSFOR develops an operational framework to identify sustainable operating spaces for forest management in fragile and marginal European landscapes. It integrates ecological, social and economic dimensions to identify thresholds within which forests, management and forest value chains can maintain biodiversity, resilience and ecosystem services.

Five case-study areas in Italy, Romania, Spain, Germany and Norway are analysed using forest inventories, remote sensing, DPSIR indicators, climate and socio-economic scenarios and spatially explicit modelling. Simulations explore the effects of management alternatives up to 2050 on timber production, carbon, biodiversity, protection, water and recreation.
