LEAF – reaLizing the potEntial of itAlian mountain Forests to provide goods and services to society – investigated how the potential of Italian mountain forests can be realised while jointly maintaining wood production, protection from hydrogeological hazards, climate regulation and the resilience of marginal mountain communities.

ForestLab developed four integrated components: Biomass Analyst, combining machine learning, satellite data, LiDAR and UAV observations to estimate biomass, harvestability, protection and carbon; Forest Simulator, modelling forest dynamics under alternative climate and silvicultural scenarios; Forest Restorer, integrating species distributions, wildfire risk and management optimisation; and Forest Carbon Assistant, addressing carbon stocks and sinks, vulnerability and material and energy substitution.
