Branzi – Bark beetle outbreak, forest decline and restoration strategies

The project reconstructed the expansion of Ips typographus outbreaks in Norway spruce forests at Branzi and analysed interactions among bark beetles, wind damage, drought and heat waves. The affected area increased from approximately 3.5 ha in 2012 to almost 198 ha by July 2023.

Mapping, remote sensing and field observations were used to develop outbreak scenarios and assess consequences for timber production, hydrogeological stability, carbon, wildfire and biodiversity. Operational guidance includes monitoring, selective interventions, deadwood retention where appropriate, protection of natural regeneration and localised multispecies planting.
