Parco Italia – afforestation, restoration and ecological connectivity

Parco Italia is a national afforestation and ecological restoration project designed to build a continuous territorial network of forests, natural and protected areas, ecological corridors, agricultural and agroforestry systems, and urban and peri-urban green infrastructure. The project integrates scientific research, territorial planning and implementation of field interventions. Forest Lab’s scientific contribution focuses particularly on defining territorial priorities for afforestation and restoration.

The project combines thematic mapping and multicriteria analysis of ecological connectivity, fragmentation, protected areas, existing forests, wildfire, tree-cover loss, hydrogeological risk, mobility networks and climate conditions to identify areas where interventions can deliver the greatest ecological and social benefits. The project also developed guidance for designing, implementing and managing new forests, indicators for ecosystem-service monitoring, a bank of potential planting sites, and pilot afforestation, reforestation and ecological-restoration projects.
